Magic V.S. Bird
I decided to center my idea around the style of vintage fight posters to further work on my typography skills. However, instead of doing a literal boxing match this week, I decided to highlight a great sports rivalry. The matchup chosen to highlight is Magic Johnson versus Larry Bird. I decided to create the poster as if it was to promote their third and final matchup in the NBA Finals.
The first step was to create the image that sits in the diamond in the middle of the poster. I first placed a hardwood background and added specific effects to it for clarity and illusion. I chose this hardwood pattern because it works well with the poster triangles and diagonal strokes in the poster. I then found Magic and Larry's image; I selected a circle of their head and scaled down multiple layers to create a radial effect. Then I illustrated the basketball court center and played with layering to emphasize basketball and the radial theme again. Afterward, I added a black and white tint to the image and a texture on top.
