LAYOUT

Fight Posters

A passion project that Combines pop culture and the vintage layout style of
old boxing posters.

I based my idea on vintage fight posters to enhance my typography skills. Instead of a boxing match, I chose to showcase the sports rivalry between Magic Johnson and Larry Bird in a poster promoting their final NBA Finals matchup. I started by creating the central image, featuring a hardwood background with specific effects to enhance clarity and illusion. The hardwood pattern complements the poster's triangles and diagonal strokes. I used a circular image of Magic and Larry's heads, scaled down in multiple layers to create a radial effect. I also illustrated the basketball court center, emphasizing the basketball and radial theme with layering. Finally, I added a black and white tint and a texture to the image.

I decided to center my idea around the style of vintage fight posters to further work on my typography skills. However, instead of doing a literal boxing match I decided to highlight a great rivalry in television. The matchup chosen to highlight is Tom versus Jerry. I decided to create the poster as if it was to promote their television show as a boxing match.

For my third passion project, I chose to make a fight poster based on the rivalry between Jim Halpert and Dwight Schrute from the infamous television series, The Office. It's a vintage-styled fight poster that features typography and typefaces to create a cohesive sign. The typefaces used are Bento Sans, BOXING, and marker style typeface. I have had a great time creating these and allowing my humor to show through in my text.

  • Overall, this passion project assignment was a much-needed reintroduction to typography and a valuable chunk of time that allowed me to experiment with typefaces in unique ways.

Regarding my favorite passion project, I decided to center my idea around vintage fight posters to further work on my typography skills. However, instead of doing a literal boxing match, I decided to highlight a great sports rivalry. The matchup is Magic Johnson versus Larry Bird. I decided to create the poster as if it was to promote their third and final matchup in the NBA Finals. The primary colors are purple, green, black, and white because of Magic and Larry's respective team colors.

For my third passion project, I chose to make a fight poster based on the rivalry between Jim Halpert and Dwight Schrute from the infamous television series, The Office. The typefaces used are Bento Sans, BOXING, and marker style typeface. I have had a great time creating these and allowing my humor to show through in my text. To conclude, I have had fun being creative and learning new skills, and sharpening old ones.
